Recommendation: Book”The Future We Choose: How to Survive the Climate Crisis”

The book “The Future We Choose: How to Survive the Climate Crisis” addresses clearly and objectively the impact of rising temperatures in our lives due to climate change. One of the things I liked most is that the work presents two distinct scenarios for the future:

  • One in which we fail to control climate change, resulting in the planet’s decline with inhospitable environments where we merely survive.
  • Another where we thrive, reversing climate change and adapting our way of life for a more sustainable and resilient world.

It seems complex but the book presents these scenarios described in a clear and didactic way. I think we all have an idea of how each scenario would be, but the book surprised me because it’s all based on well-founded references.

What stands out in the book is the practical and hopeful approach to how we can face and mitigate the effects of climate change. The authors provide a comprehensive view of the challenges and possible solutions, encouraging collective and conscious action.

Additionally, a positive aspect of the book is that it provides all bibliographical references for the information described at the end, allowing deeper knowledge for those who wish to explore more about the topic. Which is really nice because it leads you to delve into any topic they address and encourages you to continue reading beyond the book.

I recommend “The Future We Choose” for everyone who cares about the future of our planet and wishes to better understand the actions we can take to create a more sustainable and resilient world. Even for pessimists like me, I admit I could see some hope left and recognize that we have already made some progress in controlling climate change.

The authors Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac have a podcast (Outrage+Optimism: Climate Change Podcast) that discusses current world events and their relationship with climate change, along with various topics on the subject. I really liked it and recommend listening.

About the authors, Christiana Figueres is a Costa Rican diplomat who played a crucial role as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where she was a key leader in negotiating the Paris Agreement in 2015.

Tom Rivett-Carnac is a British strategist and co-founder of Global Optimism, a company dedicated to addressing the climate crisis. He also worked as a senior advisor to the UNFCCC and collaborated closely with Christiana Figueres in conducting global climate negotiations.

Here’s my review and recommendation not just for climate enthusiasts and professionals in the field but for anyone in this planet. It’s a light, constructive, and necessary read.
