Cobogó: A Versatile Element In Sustainable Construction

Origins and Evolution of Cobogó Cobogó played a fundamental role in the narrative of Brazilian modernist architecture. Created in the 1920s in Brazil by three engineers, Amadeu Oliveira Coimbra, Ernest Boeckman and Antônio de Góis, these perforated elements became icons of design and functionality in construction. Intrinsically linked to the cultural and architectural advances of…

Bioclimatic Design & Engineering | Just sharing thoughts, insights and the occasional obsession with how buildings and cities interact with climate 🌍

That sudden gust outside a tall building? Entirely That sudden gust outside a tall building? Entirely predictable.Wind microclimate assessment (CFD) shows, before construction:
→ Wind speeds and comfort at pedestrian level
→ Problem zones needing mitigation
→ Realistic conditions for natural ventilation indoorsBest assessed early, when building form and landscaping can still change.#windmicroclimate #cfd #bioclimaticsimulation
Overall, I found Dutch architecture more experimen Overall, I found Dutch architecture more experimental and creative than what I usually see elsewhere. But what impressed me most was the water management. I went on a tour through nearby cities and learned about the system of polders (land reclaimed from the sea) and dikes. This is not just a historical curiosity; it is essential knowledge for coastal regions facing climate change. The Netherlands has centuries of experience in living with water, not fighting against it. And this is reflected in its architecture and urbanism. It was a trip that really expanded my view of architecture, sustainability, and climate adaptation.#holanda #amsterdam #rotterdam #arquiteturaholande sa #polders gestãodeágua mudançasclimáticas arquiteturasustentavel”
Is it worth investing in bioclimatic design? The a Is it worth investing in bioclimatic design? The answer is YES! 💚Bioclimatic buildings reduce energy consumption, increase property value, and provide a return on investment within just a few years. But the value goes far beyond the financial side. It’s about creating spaces that are healthier, more comfortable, and more resilient to climate change. The most interesting part? Many bioclimatic strategies cost nothing when implemented from the very beginning of the project!#SustainableArchitecture #BioclimaticDesign #SustainabilityInConstruction #EnergyEfficiency #ThermalComfort
One of the arguments I hear most often against bio One of the arguments I hear most often against bioclimatic architecture is: “but it requires very specialised labour, so it becomes unfeasible.”That bothers me because it generalises too much. Yes, some sustainable systems do require specialisation, just like any more advanced technology. But most bioclimatic strategies don’t.Orienting a project correctly according to the sun? That’s a design decision, not a construction-site issue.
Sizing an overhang to provide shade in summer? Calculation + a conventional carpenter.
Positioning windows for ventilation? Traditional execution, just with a different logic. The confusion happens because we sometimes mix everything together: bioclimatic design + alternative materials + active technologies. Then yes, it gets more complicated. But you can design bioclimatically with brick, concrete, ceramic roof tiles, materials that any builder is familiar with. What it really requires is not expensive labour. It requires a well-thought-out design, clear detailing, and dialogue between the people designing and the people building. Knowledge, not necessarily sophisticated equipment.Of course, more ambitious projects will require specific training. But for most projects, we’re talking about accessible techniques applied with more intelligence.Have you ever faced this issue on site? How did you solve it?#sustainableconstruction #bioclimaticarchitecture #labour #construction #architecture sustainability
Natural daylight is one of the most accessible bio Natural daylight is one of the most accessible bioclimatic strategies, but it’s often poorly applied.I’ve seen projects with huge windows that either create so much glare that the space becomes uncomfortable, or heat up so much that no one ever opens the curtains. Other times, I’ve seen dark rooms that could have had natural light with one simple design decision. The secret is not just “adding a window”. It’s understanding where the light comes from, how it enters, and how it is distributed throughout the space. And, most importantly, how to prevent excessive heat or glare from coming in with the light. In this carousel, I shared a few practical examples that I use in projects. Nothing overly complicated — just tested solutions that work when applied properly. What I love about natural daylight is that it solves several things at once: it reduces energy consumption, improves the well-being of the people using the space, and enhances the architecture. It’s a win-win-win.Do you have a favourite natural daylight strategy? Tell me in the comments!#naturaldaylight #bioclimaticarchitecture #energyefficiency #environmentalcomfort #sustainabledesign
